The 2011 Ducal<\/a> Riesling is a real gem. Golden yellow in colour, beautiful petrol note is backed by the scent of ripe and dried fruit. On the palate, we experience all the greatness of an aged Riesling. The fruitiness is present and the minerality and tertiary aromas are incredible. Everything is in place. The texture is oily, the acids provide freshness and the fruit-mineral-tertiary components create a beautiful complexity. The wine is elegant and gentle from the first sip to the last aftertaste.<\/p>\n

We recommend decanting at least two hours before consumption.<\/p>\n

Mitja LoDuca<\/h5>\n

The business story of Mitja Lo Duca, who is originally from Tolmin, begins some twenty-five years ago. At that time, he bought what we know today as the Kek\u010deva doma\u010dija (homestead) in Trenta. Mitja was one of the most promising mountaineers of our former country in the 1980s and often climbed the maountains above Trenta, so he wished that when he returned to the valley, he would have had at least a modest refuge there.<\/p>\n

Things turned out a little differently, as the property he bought in 1991 was home to three houses, which he gradually rebuilt. He has built a home for his family in one, and a restaurant, a wine club, a conference room and nine apartments in the other two.<\/p>\n

In 2007, they received the “Golden Sower” award for the best tourist product in Slovenia. The award ceremony took place in Maribor, and the day after Mitja and Jo\u017ei visited the vineyards in the Sve\u010dina area. On one of the hills, they spotted a dilapidated farmhouse with an old wine cellar and about one and a half hectares of vineyards. An elderly lady had lived on the farm before, but after her death, the heirs decided to sell the cellar and vineyards. Mitja made a quick decision and bought the property. First, he set up a winery and planted a chardonnay vineyard for sparkling wine production on less than an hectare of hillside below the house, which had been a meadow.<\/p>\n

Vineyards<\/h5>\n

The estate focuses mainly on Riesling, Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon and Furmint. Chardonnay (for sparkling wines) and Pinot Noir are also produced.<\/p>\n

The crop load is low because they want to produce grapes of the highest possible quality and optimum ripeness. The harvest usually takes place at the end of October and beginning of November. The only slightly higher load is for chardonnay, which is entirely dedicated to the production of sparkling wines.<\/p>\n

The cultivation method is single guyot. Vineyards are grassed and mown, and only sulphur and copper are used as protectants. Due to the fact that there is a light wind at Sve\u010dina almost all the time, which drives away excessive humidity, relatively low quantities of the aforementioned protectants are needed for spraying.<\/p>\n

The vineyards, which are mainly grown on marl soil, have been farmed organically from the very beginning at Ducal, and were certified as such in 2016. Annual production under normal weather conditions is around 14 000 bottles. The altitude of the vineyards is around 400 metres above sea level, with some vineyards up to 500 metres above sea level, making them more frost-proof than vineyards at lower altitudes. Virtually all the wines are distinguished by precision, one might even say sharpness, and beautiful complexity. The latter often results from the fact that, at harvest, around 20% of the grapes have developed botrytis cinerea. <\/span><\/div>\n

Most white wines are not macerated, with the exception of vinifications in Georgian qvevries.<\/div>\n

Complexity and, for some, pretty big body, are always nicely balanced by high, juicy and pleasant acids and a more or less pronounced minerality, which is a combination of saltiness and delicate petrol notes. These are found not only in the Riesling, but also in the Welschriesling and, to a lesser extent in Furmint. Wines are usually aged for at least three years before going into bottles. Sulphur addition is low, as free sulphur often does not exceed 10 milligrams per litre.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A distinct petrol note on the nose, pleasantly sharp and precise on the palate. There is less fruitiness and more salty minerality and tertiary notes. High but pleasant acids are balanced by aromas of fresh apples, dried pears and apricots.
