Refo\u0161k Klabjan<\/a> (white label) will delight even the most demanding lovers of Istrian reds. A finely crafted red wine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The colour is ruby red, while the nose is a blend of red and black berries, herbs and some spices, notably black and red pepper. Tannins are soft, almost velvety, the acids pleasantly high. Blackberries, blackcurrants and wild blueberries dominate. The wine is slightly spicy, with a hint of black pepper and cloves. The aftertaste is incredibly juicy and long. It finishes more spicy than fruity. A ripe red apple appears just on the way out.<\/p>\n

Klabjan Estate<\/h5>\n

Uro\u0161 Klabjan works 10 hectares of vineyards, ranging in age from twenty to one hundred and thirty years, under the Karst edge near village of Osp, with the help of his brother and father. Malvasia is, of course, the predominant wine, but around 20% is the red king of Istria – Refo\u0161k. The soil is calcareous, with areas of marl. Some vineyards are completely grassed over, while others are cut around the vines. The form of cultivation is in principle a single guyot, except in some older vineyards, where the form is actually difficult to name, one could say archaic.<\/p>\n

Uro\u0161 is certified organic and the vineyards are based on practices that are actually quite close to biodynamics. Over the years, through systematic and hard work, and a wealth of experience in pruning methods, the vineyards have achieved a balance that has led, among other things, to a natural regulation of the yield of each vine. So there are no green harvests. Harvesting does not start until full phenolic ripeness, which usually means a slightly higher sugar and consequently alcohol level, which is not disturbing as it is nicely balanced by the acids and salty minerality.<\/p>\n

Wines<\/h5>\n

You will find two labels on the bottles of the precious drops of Klabjan. The white labels are produced from vineyards aged between 20 and 50 years and are generally vinified and aged for at least one year in stainless steel (inox) containers. Only sometimes, they spend a few months in a large oak barrel before bottling. The black label designates wines based on top-quality grapes from vineyards aged 50 years or more. Depending on the vintage, they mature for two to five years in old barriques and large casks. In vintages when it does not reach the desired quality, even the old vineyard harvest goes into bottles with a white label. The colour is an intense golden yellow, with ripe apricot, orange peel and meadow flowers on the nose. On the palate, we taste juicy ‘karst’ acids and plenty of minerality. A yellow apple, a ripe pear and a vineyard white peach. The tannins are present, but elegant and rounded. The aftertaste is pleasantly fruity, with a hint of light aromas of ripe fruit. Malvasia, which is still many years away, but is already
