Ecu Mephisto<\/a> is a Cabernet Franc from vines that are around 60 years old. The wine is deep ruby in colour. Full, pleasant, round and expressive nose is based on black and red berries. Blackberry, strawberry, black and redcurrant, notes of white pepper. On the palate, it is smooth, tense and charming with a medium intensity. Tannins are firm but velvety. The fruitiness is rich, deep and precise. Let’s taste the sweet spices. This wine is a true “homage” to Cabernet Franc. Finesse and delicacy, without over-extraction. The wine can sit in your cellar for many years, or you can uncork and decant it at least an hour before drinking.<\/p>\n

History of the estate<\/h5>\n

Domaine de l’Ecu is a wine-growing estate located in Muscadet Sevre et Maine appellation. The vineyards cover 25 hectares of land with a varied soil composition. The melon variety is, of course, the predominant one, but it is far from the only one. There is also Folle Blanche, Chenin, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.<\/p>\n

Guy Bossard, also known as “The Pope of Muscadet”, introduced and certified organic practices in his vineyards in the early 1970s. In the 1980s, he began to flirt with biodynamics and gradually integrated it into the philosophy of the farm, which has been Demeter certified since 1998.<\/p>\n

Ecu Today<\/h5>\n

In 2010, Fred Niger joined Bossard as a partner, keeping the basic philosophy but adding some red and white varieties to enrich the cellar’s offer. In 2014, Guy Bossard retired and Fred and his wife Claire finally took over the Ecu homestead. The former owner, of course, stayed on as a consultant.<\/p>\n

Working in vineyards and wineries<\/h5>\n

Fred continues the philosophy of his predecessor and mentor. Vineyards are all about maintaining balance and biodiversity. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum, including no use of pumps, everything including bottling is gravity-driven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Philippe Viret farms using a method that is biodynamic in principle, but which he calls “Cosmoculture”. No sulphur is added to the wines. Aromas of dark fruit, ripe plum, minerality, slightly spicy, which is even more evident on the palate, where blackberry joins in. Tannins are expressed and acids are consistent. A full, warm body. A ripe red apple with a nice long aftertaste. Exceptional freshness, despite the high alcohol.
