Partly also from the estate&#8217;s best plots of cru filler (Zottorinoto-Chiusa Spagnolo, Feudo di Mezzo-sottana and Porcaria), but above all from the vineyards dedicated to the production of this wine (Rampante sottana, Piano Daini and Cras\u00e0). A classic, traditional Nerello Mascalese with pleasant tannins and ripe fruit flavours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Frank&#8217;s vision of a traditional, balanced and rich wine from the northern Etna Valley. An incredible experience of terroir and authenticity without added sulphur. Brick-ruby, slightly opaque in colour. Aromas of ripe dark cherries, cherry pie, wild strawberries, mint, earth, spices. An exceptional concentration of black berry flavours (blueberries, blackberries), continuing into ripe black cherries, pepper, bay. Incredible freshness and minerality, and outstanding acids. Soft tannins and a beautiful texture, with tertiary aromas in full swing. A long taste. We recommend decanting at least 2 hours before consumption. A fine example of an aged Nerello.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Frank Cornelissen<\/h5>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">After a successful career as a wine broker, Belgian Frank Cornelissen moved in 2000 to one of the world&#8217;s most exceptional locations for viticulture and winemaking, terroir-wise. It is the slope of Mount Etna volcano in Sicily. He filled the first bottles with the 2001 vintage. In its first decade, he has united and divided the wine community with his unique wines, but it has certainly left no one indifferent. <\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His wines have always reflected the environment very intensely, especially the soil on which the vines grow: They are on average 60 years old. Some of them pre-date the era of Phylloxera. In our opinion, the 2012 vintage was the turning point, making the leap from wines that were characterful, mineral, very special&#8230; to wines that are still all of that, but now truly exceptional. The vintage dictates whether they will be large and more concentrated, or whether their complexity will be more on the elegant side. While Frank also produces a superb white macerated variety, Munjebel bianco, he has focused most of his attention on a variety that is undoubtedly one of the world&#8217;s greatest reds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>Nerello Mascalese<\/h5>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a native Nerello mascalese. The harvest usually takes place in the second or third week of October. The wines are usually medium red in colour, with pronounced tannins and acidity. The best examples are characterised by finesse, elegant complexity, the scent of red berries, sometimes oriental spices and even liquorice. The flavours of the younger wines definitely lean more towards the fruity side &#8211; wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries &#8211; but there is already a slightly earthy note and a lovely salty minerality which, together with the acids, which are, as said, pronounced but rounded, perfectly balance the relatively high alcohol level. This can exceed 15%. Over the years, the wines acquire noble tertiary aromas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>Vineyards and wines<\/h5>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 24 hectares of land, two hectares are olive trees, the rest are vineyards, located between 600 and 900 metres above sea level. Some are extremely old and pre-date the Phylloxera, which means that they are ungrafted. That means growing on their own rootstock (roots) and not on American rootstock. These are vineyards with predominantly sandy soils, where Phylloxera does not have the conditions to survive. On these locations, even with the gradual renewal of the vineyards, Frank plants the young vines with their own roots. <span lang=\"EN-US\">It is important to note that on Mount Etna, even in the hot days of August, there is a large temperature difference between day and night, which has a very beneficial effect on ripening. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the first decade of viticulture and winemaking on Mount Etna, Frank produced rather wild wines. In many cases excellent, truly terroir-driven, but not always. Occasionally, things did not go in the desired direction and the wines were unstable, or varied from bottle to bottle, also due to the non-addition of sulphites.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, that is a distant past. Nothing is left to chance. Neither<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the vineyard, nor in the cellar. The northern slope of Mount Etna, is like, say, Barolo in Piedmont or the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C\u00f4tes-de-Nuits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Burgundy. A large number of vineyards situated in very specific locations. They can differ a lot one from the other and are therefore ideal for producing &#8216;vini di contrada&#8217;, which means vinifying and bottling individual vineyards.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">A wine made in amphorae, practically completely without intervention, about 2\/3 new and 1\/3 old vintage (the old way for Etna Rosso).An incredible experience of terroir and authenticity without added sulphur. Light ruby, slightly cloudy in colour. Aromas of raspberries, ripe cherries and wild strawberries, leaves, earth, spices. Slightly more intense than No 6. Exceptional concentration of fruit flavours with incredible freshness, minerality, pepper, pronounced but elegant acidity. More pronounced tannins and beautiful texture. Exceptional aftertaste.
